To me candles are simply a part of what I have come to expect to have around during the holidays. I love the scent, the lighting and the simple but lovely ambiance they supply. Candles can be a bit pricey sometimes, particularly when they aren’t the color or scent you want. There have been many times when I have wanted a color to match a room and the smell was…… not so nice.

What is the color and smell conscious DIY’er to do? Why, form your own candles of course. There is a really good and very thorough tutorial for making gel candles at Tipnut. The cover everything, as far as I can tell for never having made these before, from how to get started to how to fix bubble problems. While that may or may not end up being cheaper you can at

least get total enjoyment out of something you made yourself.

Tipnut additionally provides tips for picking your container. There are timing directions as well as how and what you can embed in your candles whether you so desire. Thanks to our super tippy friends you can now prepare your candles in the scents and colors you want and know that you made them yourself. Heck, once you become a candle expert invent some more and give them as gifts that Christmas.

This is a very cool project but not one I recommend doing with children as you will be working with very hot wax. Be very careful and pour slowly, you want to end up with something that you can enjoy. Not a mess to clean up or wounds to nurse.
